“Well, I’ve tried to write this, and deleted it, and tried again more than once. So here we go again … this time I’m going to do it. But how to condense my appreciation in a couple of paragraphs won’t be easy. So I hope any readers out there who might stumble over my words will recognize the depth of my admiration for Karen (and Marie). It goes without saying (and yet I’m going to say it) that their artwork in and of itself is perfection. I first stumbled over Karen’s images I think at 500px and completely fell in love with her style. I’d been monkeying around on Corel Painter 11 and not getting very far partly due to my computer not having all the bells and whistles it needed to handle the program. Also, way back then, tutorials were few and far between … at least, I didn’t find many. Fast forward to 2015 … zippy new computer … and re discovering Karen Burns AND … wonder of wonders … she gives classes in her gorgeous, unique style!!! By this time I’d swallowed my pride. Yeah, I’d figured Photoshop out pretty well, but I knew that to get the most out of Corel I needed help. Thank heavens my first instruction came from Karen Burns!!!

The classes are concise and precise. She tells you what you’re going to learn and goes about showing you exactly every step you need to take in a logical and methodical manner. No dithering around … no extra and unnecessary time consuming side comments. Just easy to follow instruction. She includes all the materials you’ll need. Practice images, brushes, papers, textures … and her wonderful videos.

I started out with Digital Paint Works Part 1 … went on to Part 2, and have enjoyed a couple of her shorter tutorials as well. I recommend these courses to anyone who has a love of photography and traditional painting styles and techniques and wants to explore a new and exciting way to combine them both.

I can’t say that I’m where I want to be … no where near Karen and Marie’s level … but the journey, with the help of these talented ladies, is SO much fun!!!

“I’m working my way through the tutorials and had to stop right in the middle of the one for the tulips and tell you what a GENIUS you are! I am loving the hints of wallpaper and cracked paint ~ such a clever touch ~ adds SO much! For the longest time I have been like a kid having a great new toy without batteries ~ until you came along! Thank you!”  ~Lois

“Amazing experience to watch a pro paint.” ~Carole Massey

“I watch and rewatch just to watch brush work – length, size, direction, etc. – and your commentary as you do so provides lots of insight.”  ~Stephen Milano

“I learned so much from this first tutorial.  Watching you paint is more helpful to me than listening.  Please don’t stop, we need Part Two.”  ~ Sabrina Lindsay

“I am loving some of the tips we have been receiving in our instruction.  I am especially enamored of that Emboss Filter technique for texture.”  ~Cindy Madden

“I am so happy with what I’ve learned in this first tutorial!  I’m one that unfortunately likes to rush through the intro stuff to get to the good stuff, but this has never been helpful in the learning process.  I made myself take the time and watch everything and it’s going to pay off.”  ~Rhonda Nash Stansberry

“This work with Corel Painter is very captivating and I have wanted to get involved in the area for many years.  Working with Karen and Marie is wonderful ~ they are supportive and knowledgeable.  I can’t say one negative word about them as individuals or their teaching.  I jumped in and did my “dog paddle”. . . and I finished the workshop with new skills neatly tucked in place.  I had no idea what to expect other than I had to get past my fear of PhotoShop and of Corel Painter to accomplish my desire to paint.  Marie and Karen’s tutorials made it easy to work through beginner issues and get to the act of painting the first day!  The brushes are amazing ~ a journey all their own.  The tutorials are step by step directions that walk you through the entire process of taking a photo through the edits needed.  The detailed instructions given with Corel Painter 2015 take you through the settings, brushes, opacities, and more.  Marie’s knowledge of PhotoShop is incredible!  This workshop was so empowering!” ~ Carole Massey

“I have followed Karen’s work for years now and have admired her styles, versatility and insatiable appetite for excellence with her art. I cannot travel to her “live” workshops so was delighted to see that an online course is being offered. I have spent enough time with Corel Painter over the years to know that I need instruction. I believe that I have found it with her upcoming course. Can’t wait for it to start.” ~ RavenJeanHill

I “met” Karen through following her on Flickr a little over a year ago. Absolutely loved her work. When she posted that she was going to have a workshop in the south of France, I booked my flight! Most amazing experience. Not only is she a terrific painter, she is a wonderful teacher. I am so excited about what I accomplished and where I can go from here. She had me painting what I was trying to express within the first hour and then she took me beyond anything I could have imagined. She and Marie Otero are the perfect duo. Everything on the trip was so well planned and yet, never hurried. Every day was filled with a new adventure of photography and painting. I feel truly blessed to have been a part of this wonderful experience.”  ~ Micky

Going to France and being a part of the amazing Workshop with Karen Burns and Marie Otero made me a privileged and fortunate student of Photography and Digital Painting.  Now my image perception has changed and I have much more important details to capture and present a story behind my photos.  Karen and Marie taught us to use Corel Painter in a very easy way to understand and to put in practice immediately.  I could not believe that I was able to paint my photos.  The workshop was worth it and not only talking about technique I learned, but also enjoyed the wonderful company and comradery of the instructors and participants.  I really enjoyed it and I will do another workshop again in the near future with these two undeniably talented people.  ~Maria Goto

I have just finished Karen Burns’ (and Marie Otero’s) workshop in France, Lovely Languedoc, and I’m still reeling. I spent a week in a beautiful, supportive environment – photographing and painting. PAINTING! I’m an experienced Photoshop user and I’ve attended a few travel workshops – but this is the first one where I really feel like I’ve learned a new skill and stepped light years into my future. Trying to use Corel Painter on my own had me frustrated – but a few hours under Karen’s gentle guidance and I felt like I could master this new medium. Karen is a gentle, patient, encouraging teacher – and she makes the complicated simple. Taking a class with Karen was worth every bit of my time & money.” ~ Terry

Where to begin to describe the Workshop in France? From the moment we were swept up at the Toulouse airport, the drive offered us the glimpse of what our photography world would include. Arriving in Durfort was like being transported back in time. We had day trips to other villages, spontaneous stops and planned opportunities for photography. We were lead to the views of the Pyrenees to fields of poppies to abandoned abbeys to bustling markets. It was an incredible variation to hone photography skills with two fantastic teachers of Karen Burns and Marie Otero. When at “home”, the workshops were hands on demonstrations with time for personal guided chances for specific questions, all while working photographs taken during our excursions. This combination includes various levels of skill and knowledge in photography, Photoshop and Corel. I was able to learn and grow beyond what my expectations could ever have imagined. Karen’s Corel training includes multiple take home files of samples, tips, textures and brushes. With no experience, in a few hours you are creating digital paintings of your own. Love the art of these two women. Love learning from two fantastic and supportive women who generously share their expertise. Returning home, I feel I have been given a gift to expand my own skills in leaps. Undeniably an incredible trip which was fabulously planned, through in training/learning and relaxed companionship. This is a full immersion into art given through kind expert teaching. A mystic combination I will never forget. Thank you for all the effort and encouragement. Priceless.”  ~ Susan

Just finished one of the best workshops that I have ever attended. Karen’s class on Corel Painter x3 was more than just a workshop – her natural ability and dedication to teach made this workshop better than any other than I have ever attended. All of us were first time users for Corel (experienced Photoshop users) and she had us painting within the first four hours of the class. She cut to the point and made this class so easy. She constantly was willing the go the extra mile by spending individual time with each student. She is a teacher that will let allow your own creative abilities to be used. Everyone in the class was so pleased – the word “awesome” was repeated so many times it was unbelievable. Check out Facebook – all the pictures that we (beginners) painted for the weekend were posted. I would attend any course that Karen offered as you will come away with more than even planned. Truly an amazing teacher!” – Debi

“I am heading home today after attending a fantastic workshop with Karen Burns all about painting with Corel Painter and Adobe Photoshop.  Karen creates such stunning work with her digital paintbrushes.  In this workshop she generously shared her methods, tips and techniques and resources for creating beautiful paintings.  While I know a bit about Photoshop, Corel Painter is a huge and powerful piece of software and learning the program can be a bit daunting for someone who just wants to sit down and paint.  Karen gave us a roadmap to get started painting quickly and we all loved the results we were able to acheive in just one weekend.  Besides demonstrating her painting techniques and sharing her secrets, Karen spent one-on-one time with each of us.  She suggested brushes we might use to achieve the results we were looking for or techniques we might consider to impove the compostion of our paintings.  At the end of the weekend we each went home with at least one finished painting – printed on fine art paper or canvas – that we can frame and hang on our wall at home.  I created FOUR paintings that I am thrilled with!  I have never before attended a workshop where I have been this productive and so well pleased with my work.  Kudos to Karen for being an outstanding teacher who conveys the knowledge of what she does so well and who inspires us to create paintings of our own.  Thank you, Karen for a truly awesome workshop.” ~ Mary

“Karen is not only a great artist but also  a wonderful teacher.  She is always willing to go the extra mile to share her knowledge and creativity with others.  She is very generous and caring, which also makes her a great person and a friend.  After I met her, she taught me about so many tools and processing techniques that my photography style and artistic work was improved significantly.  Karen generously shared her beautiful textures and art work as well.  With her guidance and assistance, within a year, approximately 30 of my images were selected to Flickr’s EXPLORE pages and my view counts reached to 400,000.  So, thank you Karen for being the person you are and I wish that everyone could be lucky enough to receive your guidance.”  ~Batu

“She’s very talented in her photography as well as in her creativity-the things she comes up with are unique and inspiring. Im always awed by her thinking and the results of her creativity” ~ Shirina

“Karen is such a supportive and encouraging member of flickr. Her own photography is both inspirational and motivational and demonstrates her love of photography. She is a very valuable member of flickr, she is always willing to share her skills and explain how to do various techniques. Her work is ‘up there’ with the best, she is the epitome of flickr. I am honored to be on her contact list. Thank you Karen.” ~ Audrey

“Karen’s images are one of my favourite sources of inspiration. Not only is she a gifted photographer with an impeccable eye, her processing skills are untouchable and amazing.”   ~Alda

“The domain of digital technology and artistic quality are the essence of this gallery.”  ~Mat

“Karen is an incredible artist who generously shares her talent with every posting. She has mastered textures and layers. She can spice up a colour palette or mute it to suit the needs of her creations. Her subjects are primarily still life, the natural world, or vintage photos masterfully manipulated by today’s technology to create a haunting new beauty for us to behold. I haven’t known of Karen or her work for very long, however, her influence on my own direction with photography was profound and immediate. I had never really admired the use of texture in photos until I saw the subtle way that Karen manipulated textures to enhance her photos. Now, I think of textures as a way to enhance and improve a photo rather than an additional level that can mar the purity of the unadulterated image. Beneath the layers and the textures lay those flawless original photos but in Karen’s hands they are transformed into a modern, digitally created art form that we may all admire on flickr.”   ~Gary

“Karen’s images are well composed and well thought out, beautifully presented and her post-processing technique is superb. Her photo editing technique is very unique, her talent at trying out new ways of producing her images are inspiring to us all. She also produces and shares her incredibly beautiful textures with us and for that I would like to thank her very much on behalf of our members of Texture My World Group, including myself. Karen has been a constant inspiration to me.”  ~Irene

“Karen’s giclee prints are sublime works of art whose beauty cannot be fully realized until viewed in person. Her keen eye and masterful processing skills result in works that are thought-provoking, charming, and immediately captivating. Whether presenting a panoramic view of ancient Naples or documenting a tiny fragment of everyday life, Karen’s work is sure to inspire even the most discerning collector.”  ~Sally

“There are some really great pieces of work within your images. I would be very proud if I could reproduce such work myself.”  ~Phil

“A BEAUTIFUL PERSON & WONDERFUL ARTIST!” ~B

“Karen, beside knowing of your generosity to others in respect of your free textures, help & encouragement, one thing that I love about you is that you don’t get caught in a rut – turning out basically the same image style time after time. You are willing to EXPLORE new ideas & directions and this is clearly seen in your vast wealth of wonderful images created so beautifully for our edification & inspiration. I’ve had a quick look at your website – WOW! Another wonderful example of your creativity – your site is EXQUISITE as is its content – I wish you every success with it. You deserve to have your ARTWORK known throughout the world! Even though your work encompasses a wide range of creative techniques & concepts and your NOT STYLE BOUND, I still can recognize your SIGNATURE & ARTISTRY in all your work – it has a kind of distinctive character to it (like a subtle watermark) You come over as humble even though you have much to be proud of – you care for others & take time out of your own creative arena to view the work of others and give them (including myself) much encouragement. Wishing you every success in your future ventures – stay well & maintain your wonderful creativity!” ~ Andrew
